Be the Light!
Thursday, June 19th, 2008
Busy companies require strong focus. It takes a strong leader to be sure that employees are empowered to do their job. A strong leader to make available the tools to accomplish the goal. A strong leader to coach when needed and get out of the way when you’re not. Much like the mules of the mining days of old. Taken to the mines to pull the carts, the mules were trained to be ready at a moments notice. Back and forth through the shaft, pulling the carts in the dark. Some even learned to open the trap doors. It is often said that if the mules were left in the mines to long, they would become blind. Mine lore states that companies would bring the mules out each evening for rest, feeding and also to reduce the risk of blindness.
While I would not say that your workforce is a bunch of mules, I would use a comparison in their hard work and willingness to accomplish the goals of the company. With proper care, (training, reward, rest) they will continue to do a great job for a good leader. Good leaders will foster great relationships with the people they work with and for. Good leaders will make sure the “workhorse” of their company gets plenty of light. How can that be achieved? What about taking the time to inquire about their personal interests? Learning about employees hobbies and personal goals enables you to connect in a meaningful way and perhaps delegate job duties that are aligned in areas they love. Giving employees good training and education sheds light on the company goals. This lights the way for success as your employees will see clearly what needs to be accomplished and when. Clear and direct communication are necessary for the delivery of your training. Skill developement can be delivered in many different ways, but always being honest and sincere will achieve trust with your crew.
Drug testing follows these same lines. Communicating with your staff about why you have started a program, how it will work, and what their role is, will allow them to work with you in implementation of the program. A workforce with a good drug free policy will bring a reduction in time loss accidents, better production times and most importantly, a healthier staff. Drug testing is not about “catching” people doing drugs. It’s about making sure your employees are safe at work. Just like the mules at the mine, bringing them to the light to protect their health. So don’t be afraid the SHED THE LIGHT on the most important asset you have in your company, your employees.
